Title:State of R&D in Photonics-related Fields in Japan's Industry and Academia

Speaker:Dr.Kimio Tatsuno(Optoelectronic Industry & Technology Development Association, Japan)

Abstract:Photonics product statistics in Japan provided by OITDA will be shown and analyzed from the aspects of three basic issues that the Japanese R & D state is facing. The issues are (1) off-shoring due to the deep economical integration in the east Asia, (2) the importance of the knowledge based innovation and (3) global warming issue. The “Green Digital Economy” will lead the challengeable photonics R & D by means of the opening innovation through the industry-academia collaborations and the international exchanging collaborations.

About speaker: In 1973, he joined Hitachi CRL (Central Research Laboratory) Kokubunji, Tokyo after the graduate school of the University of Osaka. Starting his research on the holographic memory, he has been engaged in the development of optical technologies for the diode laser applications as the optical disk, diode laser interferometer, laser beam printer, diode pumping SHG laser and diode laser module for the fiber communication. From 1986 to 1987, he stayed at Philips Research in Eindhoven, the Netherlands as a visiting researcher. In 2003, on leave from Hitachi CRL, he joined NISTEP (National Institute of Science and Technology Policy) in the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and involved in the technology trend research and political proposals from the aspects of industry, university and government collaborations for the innovation systems in the field of optics and photonics. In 2007, he joined OITDA (Optoelectronic Industry & Technology Development Association) on leave from Hitachi Ltd., for the planning and promotion of the national photonics project. He was a part time professor at the Tokyo Metropolitan University and a member of JSAP, OSJ, IEICE, OSA, EOS and serving for them as several committee’s member. He was a vice president of OSJ in 2005-6 and a general co-chair of the ODF’08, Taipei, a plenary speaker of Photonics 21, Brussels in 2008 and a plenary speaker of OIT ’09, Shanghai.
